The Hearken Engagement Management System provides several ways to monitor and analyze your public-powered journalism efforts. Here’s what our EMS surfaces for you:

Summary (found on the EMS dashboard)

You can set the time period for the following data using the dropdown menu on the top right of your dashboard. You’ll see your organization’s:

  • New submissions

  • New votes

  • Popular forms

  • Popular polls

  • How many new people (measured as unique email addresses) have engaged with you

  • How many returning people (measured as unique email addresses who have previously engaged) have engaged with you

Also see below for:

  • Audience member analysis (repeated question-askers, etc.)

  • Overview data for multi-EMS users

Voting Rounds: Votes per Day (found on the EMS dashboard and the voting rounds page)

This column graph shows the number of votes per day by voting round, color-coded to show the different rounds your audience members were voting on. You can use the buttons at the top to switch views, showing the last one week, four weeks or eight weeks. You can also hover over the columns for the exact number included, and use the squares at the bottom to toggle specific rounds on or off in the graph view.

Number of responses over the last 8 weeks by location (found on the EMS dashboard)

If you collect postal or ZIP codes in your form embeds, this interactive map lets you see where your responses are coming from. Zooming in, our US-based partners will see color-coded ZIP code area maps. US partners will also be able to check a box to show all ZIP code boundaries, so you can learn more about the gaps in your responses from your audience. Our non-US based partners will see circles over the general geographic area associated with the codes given along with the responses. To set up your embeds to flow into this map, choose the postal code option when adding that custom field. For more, see our guide to creating and customizing your form embeds.

At the bottom right corner of the map you’ll see a link to download the raw data. Clicking this will download a GEOJSON file. This file can be used for additional analysis or exploration. If you’d like to dig in further, or create a version to embed or share in other ways, you can import the file into other mapping applications, like Mapbox (which we used to create the maps), Google Maps, or on geojson.io. You can also convert it to a CSV, using a JSON to CSV converter.

The postal code data will also continue to be shown as a column on the CSV download of all your responses (available by clicking the export link at the top of the questions page in your EMS).

Audience Members Overview

You can find this dashboard by going to the icon of three people in the left navigation menu. If you hover over, it will say "Audience Members." This dashboard is where you can see who your superfans are and how they are engaging with you. You can see who has asked the most questions or left their email address after voting multiple times. You can also see the total count of audience members who have engaged with you more than once.

An audience member is defined as a unique email address submitted with a question or vote. People who ask questions that are hidden or deleted are removed from this analysis.

This view also shows how many audience members have opted-in using your checkboxes.

Overview of data for multi-EMS users

For our users who have access to more than one EMS through the same email address, you’ll now be able to access a roll-up of data across all organizations from one page. To see that, go to the drop-down menu at the top right corner once you’re logged in to any EMS and select Overview.

Included are multi-organization versions of many of the features listed above, including:

  • a table with your organizations’ all-time data

  • a column graph with questions per day by organization, which you can look at over the past one week, four weeks or eight weeks

  • a column graph showing votes per day by organization, which you can look at over the past one week, four weeks or eight weeks

The table includes the following information:

You can use a drop-down menu at the upper right corner of your EMS to navigate between the overview and different organizations' Hearken systems.
